  2. In a wider usage, the term NGO can be applied to any non-profit organization, which is independent from Government. NGOs are typically value-based organizations, which depend, in whole or in part, on charitable donations and voluntary service. Although the NGO sector has become increasingly professionalized over the last two decades, principles of altruism and voluntarism remain key defining characteristics.

    A classification, according with the NGO Global Network, of the major groups of the NGOs can be considered as following:

    Other types of NGOs

    1. Entrepreneurial NGOs - is an officially registered or clearly identified group of citizens or other public association that:  

    - does not act as an official governmental body;  

    - is a not-for-profit organization;  

    - functions at international or national, regional, and local level;  

    - pursues work for the development of the private sector, entrepreneurship and SMEs; and  

    - contribute to technology & innovation transfer from advanced market economies of SMEs of the CITs and the countries of the third world.  

    2. Operational NGOs - Orgs whose primary purpose is the design and implementation of development-related projects.

    They are classified into:

         i) community-based organizations (CBOs) - which serve a specific population in a narrow geographic area (e.g. Nachala in Bulgaria and Moznosti in The formal Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia);

         ii) national organizations - which operate in individual countries (e.g. Hungarian SEED Foundation), and

         iii) international organizations - which are typically headquartered in developed countries and carry out operations in more than one country (e.g.: WASME, Microfinance Centre for CEEs and CIS)involved national organizations and 10% involved international organizations.

    3. Advocacy NGOs - Orgs whose primary purpose is to defend or promote a specific cause.
