How are MLB playoff stats applied to career stats?

I am a bit confused as to the difference between stats in the regular season and stats in the playoffs. Do the playoff stats NOT count towards a player's specific season's stats but DO count towards the player's career stats?

i.e. Say Manny hits 40 homers in the 2008 season and 4 more in the playoffs. Manny would have 40 HRs for the season and then the 4 playoff HRs would be added to his playoff and career stats?

  1. Post season stats don't count toward regular season career stats. THey cound let say toward their own post season career stats. It basically just shows who is better in the season and who's numbers get better under the pressure. Plus its kinda cheap. Some people would get extra career games to add to their stats or to help them break a record.

  2. Postseason statistics get their own accounting section.

Ruth hit 15 home runs in World Series play, but one never sees him credited with hitting 729 HR.

  3. I don't think playoff stats count as career stats
