  1. Think of the Mariner Outboard as a gray Mercury which is exactly what they are. In the very early days the smaller Mariners were made in Japan by Yamaha but since the early eighties they were all Mercury's. Remember the old Johnson/Evenrude combination, same with Mercury/Mariner. As they come dome the assembly line the needs for the day determined if is was black paint or gray paint that was sprayed. Any parts ordered for the Mariner came in Mercury black. I have owned an Mariner 80 HP and I now own a Mariner 135 HP. I am happy with it.
