  1. I recently purchased an Olympic Ar15.  It was $595 at the gun show.

Right out of the box, no upgrades except for my 4-12x40mm scope, i was shooting 3/8" groups at 30 yards at the range.  Took it outside a few days later and was shooting 1" at 100 yards, just leaning up against the truck.

For the money, well worth it, for a gun I will just use for plinking, varmints, and coyote eradication.  You can spend more money, and get a better gun.  DPMS 5.56 flat top 20" fluted bull barrels list at $880 dealer price, but good luck getting them to send one.  Rock River and Les Baer are tops in my book, and you will spend nearly $2000+ for one of their better models.

It just depends on your applications and expectations.

  2. Oly build a good rifle for the money.

If you want a casual plinker a good choice.

Fit and finish on the Oly wont be "Colt" quality and you may find some cast parts... but nowdays Colts are not Colt quality

Chrome lined barrels... if your shooting 1000's of rounds in a military situation yes...nice to have but not critical.

I'd go to Olympic arms...they post data and specs for their products

After you do some shopping compare Oly to DMPS or Rock River... for a few dollars more they are a better value in my opinion

  3. you can buys a tripped lower, assemble it with a parts kit, and then buy the upper and stick it on. it takes about an hour to assemble the lower with a hammer and some punches. you have to buy the lower from a gun shop just like a complete firearm, but the rest of the parts can be bought online and shipper to your house. this way, you save money and bueld exactly the rifle you want. i built a 20 inch A4 rifle for $640. check your www.del-ton.com for rifle kits that come with everything but a stripped lower. stripped lowers are around $100-150.

  4. I build match AR's and have an Olympic Service Match AR-15 I used for many years in 600 yard military competition.  There are no finer AR's made.  The trigger on my Oly is what I compair all others to.

'Cheaper' is relative in AR's - there are so many options and equipment selections .......... it's hard to find two AR's that are identical in a gun shop with 20+ of them.  A $500 AR is not a deal if you need to drop another $400 to outfit it the way you want!

    Hope this helps

  5. OK but I tested a bushmaster and an Olympic together. I bought a Bushmaster and I'm glad I spent the little extra. I carry it in my cruiser every day. It has never let me down.
