If a chocolate bead is made, how is the coating applied without melting and mixing with the chocolate. Surely the sugar is heated then applied?!

  1. the chocolate center's are mixed in giant drums similar to cement mixers and as they rotate nice and slowly they spray a liquid sugar coating that is room temp or a bit cooler and coat the smarties until a thickness is reached after which color is added to different drums to make all the pretty rainbow colors we see in a box..... watch Discovery channel's How'd they Do That! They profiled this process a few months back, and it really is a universal candy technique and used in the making of many coated candies we enjoy today!

  2. No, the sugar is not heated. Corn syrup, which is naturally liquid, is one of the main ingredients in the coating. It's sprayed on. Here's a BBC article (with pics and video!) on how they do it:

I linked the page with how they do the coating, but you can check out the rest of the pictures for the full story.

  3. There are 2 little openings at each end of the smarties, where the sugar shell is filled with chocolate, then the openings covered up by the colouring.

  4. ya like sammy k said, smarties don't have chocolate in them. they are like sugary chalky things.

  5. In the same way that chocolate chips don't melt in cakes and biscuits when baked.

  6. I'm not sure what you're trying to ask, but Smarties don't have chocolate
