  1. Tornadoes form in thunderstorms that have very strong updrafts AND mid-level wind shear .  The thunderstorm is sucking in warm moist air at it's base and as the air rises it releases heat, which in turn causes it to rise even faster and higher.  (Think of the same principle that a Hot Air Balloon rises higher when more heat is put into it.)  Anyway, as the air travels upwards in the atmosphere, it can encounter another jet stream of air that it moving in a different direction, so basically you have two jet streams.  One at the top of the thunderstorm pushing it along, and another one which is not as strong feeding into it around the mid-level up.  This mid-level jet must also be traveling at a different angle from the main upper-level jet.  This is what gives the rising air it's rotation.  As the thunderstorm grows in size and intensity, the rotation also increases, then falling rain starts cooling the air on one side, and dry air is usually present on the back side of the storm.  Together these forces act like walls that concentrate all the energy of the storm into the inflow at the base.  With no where else to go, the air entering the thunderstorm begins to drop lower and lower and soon you have your tornado!  I hope I wasn't too confusing?

  2. i believe tornadoes are formed when a cold front and a warm front collide and start to rotate together. a strong updraft will push the funnell from being horizontal to vertical.

  4. Tornadoes develop from thunderstorms when the cold and warm air meets. Rising air within thunderstorms cause an air shift from horizontal to vertical. A twirling rain-free wall cloud evolves. Within minutes a tornado develops from the thunderstorm.
