  1. by the name of the city if thats what you are asking


  2. They are determined by the city name or airport name. And ultimately determined by the International Air Transport Association. For example, IAH stands for International Airport Houston. SAT is for San Antonio. AMS is for Amsterdam. ORD if for Orchard Fouglas Field. DFW is for Dallas/Fort Worth.MEM is for Memphis.DTW is for Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County International Airport.SFO is for San Francisco .

  3. The International Air Transport Association assigns them and can use any reason they want.  Sometimes it's historical.  O'Hare International in Chicago is "ORD" because it used to be Orchard Douglas Field.
