It depends on the animal.  Pets are usually ornamental or symbolic of the family ideal (one ex: spouse, two kids, house with white picket fence and a Golden Retriever).  Wild animals are more diversely represented.  Think about the personality traits given to animals of a particular species in films if you want examples for a specific species.
