  1. Iron atoms have 3 unpaired electrons. If the spins of these electrons are all lined up they all attract and repel .

A blind student once described a magnet as a parking lot where all the cars are parked in the same direction, in rows, and would be easy for her to walk through. And the nonmagnetic material as a parking lot where all the cars are parked everywhich way and would be hard for her to walk through.

  2. Exactly the same as in a non-magnet, the magnetism is produced by the aligning spin of the electrons in the shells of the atoms. So at one end there will be a majority spin up say and at the other the majority spin down.

  3. The same way as in other material, however, in a ferrous metal the atoms form molecules that are mini magnets, if these molecules line up in one direction with north poles pointed in the same plane, a magnet is formed.
