How are carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins important to the well being of the individual?

  1. carbohydrates=energy. lipids=protection and temperature regulation. proteins=build and repair cells.  


  2. These are three of the four main macromolecules in an individual.  The missing one is nucleic acids.

    Carbs =  Provide energy and sometimes structure (i.e. cellulose), also important in cell self recognition (cell membrane glycoproteins).

    Lipids = Storage of energy, but also cushioning and insulation.  Also includes some hormones such as steroids (testosterone and estrogen).

    Proteins = Main structural component, but most importantly enzymes which control the chemical reactions of the body

    And, even though you didn't ask...

    Nucleic acids = DNA and RNA for heredity and control of cell processes including the direct production of the protein and indirectly (by way of enzymatic reaction) for everything else.
