How are cartoons animated?

I recently read somewhere that Family Guy draws every single frame.

I thought all you needed to do was to draw it once? Don't they use animation software?

  1. some can use anime software, but entire movies have been made buy just drawing out each thing, its just depends on who makes the animated tv show,/ movie

  2. Well some times things can be animated like that but it costs a lot of money (or so I heard) So sometimes they think its cheaper just to draw every frame and put it all together like that.. (or so I heard)

Well actually thats what I heard on an interview of some manga author who released an anime... a few years ago.

He said that they could use a technology to animate things, but you would still have to end up drawing many frames, or they could try and build theyre own program to animate things.. but you can only animate things to a certain limit...

    I hope this helps

  3. Family Guy is animated the traditional way, where many drawings are used to create motion. However, everything is cleaned up, inked, and colored digitally.
