How are competitors for the Olympics selected?

Do they apply, or are they invited? Are they already national champions? Do sports clubs put their best people forward? Is there some kind of formal qualifier? And how far in advance are they selected?

  1. Each country is probably a little different but I know in the US there are several competitions that they have to compete in one of them in Nationals and Worlds. There are several others and you have to place within the top 4 or 5 to make a team. I am not sure of the soccer teams, Volleyball and other teams like that. I am referring to gymnastics and figure skating. but yes they do all have to compete and win or place.

  2. It depends on the sport.  Some do a trial/qualifier, some have a committee to select, and some have a point system based on national competitions throughout the year.

  3. The countries hold leagues within their own country which they then send the best to compete for their country in the olympics.

  4. They compete in events during the year which shows there standings, Then they are selected.

  5. It depends on the sport. I know in swimming they have olympic trials where hundreds of swimmers come to compete for a spot on the team. In beach volleyball I am pretty sure the Olympic committee looks at the standings from the international competition from the past two or so years. In gymnastics I think they look at national championships and then have a training camp where they solidify the team. So I hope this helps!  As far as how far in advance they are selected I am guessing it has to be at least a month or two so they can have training with the olympic coaches. Oh and generally the coach selects the athletes especially for sports like gymnastics and basketball. I think in swimming it is mainly by times the swimmers swam at the trials.

    Ok hope this helps you!

  6. They have trails and see who is the best to represent their Country. Like a mini Olympics, but your versing people in your own Country.

    I Hope I Helped.
