  1. Swimmers step on them, drop things on them and break them, or break off samples.

  3. There are so many ways that I can not explain them all. It starts with the plane ride to the holiday place, and just goes on and on. The extra water that is used for showering and toilets in many places is pumped almost directly into the sea, this contains soap deposits, cleaning chemicals etc. There is also the change to the local surroundings, etc hotels, roads for example  that all contribute to altering and increasing the amount of rain run off that contains things that would be toxic to the reef. Over fishing in the area to supply restaurants and cafes with fresh fish is also a possibility as well as tourists fishing on the reef for entertainment. There is the added pollution from out board motors that take the tourists out for snorkeling trips, not to mention boats bumbing into the reef or dropping an anchor on it for example. The anchor does not even have to be on the reef but either the rope or chain can brush against the reef and damage it. Coral is so delicate that not only  just touching it can damage it but swimming too close to it with flippers and creating a big 'wash' can cause sand to get swept over it, even brushing it with the edge of the flipper. Not to mention the thousands of people that think that they can take a little bit and it wont matter. Even touching it secretes chemicals from your skin that can damage the living coral. The list just goes on and on but this covers a few points for you.

  4. Coral reefs are similar to a cave's stalagmites. If you touch or disturb the coral you will kill it. If a tourist simply swims over the coral and doesn't touch, there will be no problems. Of course, people can't do the right thing. Look at the graffiti at nearly any park you go to.
