Football, field hockey requires smaller grounds,I think

I mean, what happens to the pitch?

How is it made again? Also how is a cricket pitch made,in the first place

Is it made just by taking out grass from 22 yards strip of the ground in the centre

  1. The pitch in the MCG is removed (lifted out) and stored just outside the stadium with other pitches where they are prepared. The MCG is then used for AFL games. (Australian Football League) [this game is not like soccer] which is the most popular sport in Australia and is only really played here (in oz). The biggest events that happen at the MCG are the Anzac Day AFL Football, the AFL grand final and the boxing day test (that 2 to AFL and one to cricket) The same thing happens to grounds like the SCG where AFL is played. For soccer and rugby games there are slightly smaller grounds like the Telstra Dome which accomidates these sports and where cricket isn't played.

Also with the pitches, often at the start of the cricket season about 5 or 6 pitches will be placed in the middle of the MCG. Then the matches played there are simply rotate around the pitches. It's like a cycle, after one pitch has been used, it will be 'repaired' over time as the other pitches are used.

    Additionally:

Yes AFL is the same as aussi rules football.

It's quite hard to properly explain how they move the pitch (most simply they lift the pitch in or out with a crane and put normal turf in place) but there is a great explaination on the MCG website, this is the link.

    http://www.mcg.org.au/The%20MCG%20Stadiu...

(if the link doesn't work just go to www.mcg.org and on the home page click on the 'the MCG stadium' link and select 'portable cricket pitches'

This has got all the details about the portable pitch system they use and it is very detailed and clear.

As for what the pitch is made out of, I am 99% sure that it is a clay based soil

  2. the mcg pitch is lifted in and out

its actually made somewhere else. A few weeks before the cricket season it is lifted in and after the cricket season it is lifted out
