How are dreadlocks made?

I never really thought about them until watching an episode of What Not to Wear. How the heck are they started? And how are they kept clean?

i know that you wash them with bar soap. and when you get them they dry out your hair! but i have no idea how they are made lol

basically you wash your hair but dont brush it. after a while, you can start to twist strands together to get a rope like look
