How are ethical standards impacted by our society?

When society says something isn't OK, the ethical standard changes..

Ex:

Society says there should be Affirmative Action and people should be judged by their skills and not the color of their skin or gender.

It is no longer OK to judge candidates (job, school, etc) by their race or gender. While it may have gone under the radar in the past, society has stepped in and exposed the issue. Ethical standards of entry have changed.
