  2. Peter_AZ is correct about the "blank" and the mandrel.

The material for the blank (today's rods being graphite) comes in a cloth - called prepreg. while others use strands of graphite which is given stregnth by adding what is called a scrim - either fiberglass or graphite which is wound spirally on the longditudinal fibers. the cloth

is soaked in either epoxy resins or thermoplastic resins to bind it together. it ( the blank) is then formed on a mandrel and baked at high temperature under pressure to cure the resins and impart stregnth to the formed blank.

After curing most blanks are sanded to make them smooth, some companies leave the blanks alone (matte finish) while others coat the blanks witha clear finish. The reel seat is fitted and glued into place, the eyes are bound to the blank via thread and then coated w/ epoxy.

  4. First, they start with a "blank". This is a hollow, tapered piece of material (fiberglass, graphite, or some composite material.) This is formed around a tapered metal rod called a mandrel. The size and shape of the mandrel and the thickness and other properties of the material affect the way the rod bends. You can buy rod blanks and all the parts and put the rod together yourself, or buy a finished rod (as most people do) -- the process in building the rod is the same.

The rest of the process is putting the parts on the blank. Generally the grip and reel seat are fastened on first. Guides are fastened by tightly wrapping strong nylon thread around the rod, then the tip guide is glued on. After that there's epoxy varnish, and it's ready to go.

You can do the wrapping turning the rod on your knees (I did a few that way as a kid) but most rod builders have a machine which turns the rod, making the wrapping much easier.

  5. What type?  Cane poles, split bamboo, fiberglass, or carbon fiber?  I even had a steel pole once upon a time. Each type is made in a different way.
