I need to get a key cut. How does it work? How much does it cost and how long does it take? Is there any chance that the original key will be damaged?

  1. They use a grinding machine where the original key is clamped in one side and the blank is clamped in the other.  When the original key is traced the grooves are cut in the blank.  The original key is not damaged as it never touches the grinding wheel.  Should only cost a couple of dollars per key.  Most hardware stores will copy them for you as well as a locksmith.  I have had better luck with locksmiths though as they keep their equipment in better shape.

  2. your local hardware store usually does stuff like that or locksmith. they usually just follow the grooves of your old key. i haven't got a key cut in awile but it usually dosn't cost and arm or a leg usually around 10$ or more give or take. no not that i know of the original key will not be damaged , i've never heard of that that would be bad service if they did.
