  1. Natural:

    Banks of coarse river load and other material that has been transported down river, that are made when the river floods and bedload is carried out wider than before and deposited. It is left when the river recedes creating a higher natural bank.

    Man made:

    Higher banks are built by man, (can be made from concrete or simply rocks and soil) so that when river level rises it does not break its banks and flood surrounding area as easily.
