  1. In the old days, working at an ice rink, we used to use thin paper to lay down for the lines, using chalk lines as a guide for where they went.

    Nowadays, most markings are painted on the ice.  At a rink in town here, they have them painted on the white cement floor and they show through to the ice.  At another rink that has a sand floor, they paint them usually once at the start of the season, and once again in the middle of the season.  I'd guess that NHL teams have some sort of big stencils to lay down to paint logos so they come out looking correctly as I've seen a local rink here doing that.

I watched them do this with the Stanley Cup Finals logo on the ice at Joe Louis Arena.  The logo is made out of a very thin sheet of plastic mesh, like a vinyl.  The logo is laid down on ice and then water is sprayed over it in order to create a layer of ice  that covers the logo.  The ice is thin enough so the logo shows through but thick enough so the players can skate over it.
