Question:

How are movies more interactive than video games?

I am writing an essay (how thrilling), and I am trying to come up with logical reasons why films are just as interactive (if not more) than games. I will list my two main arguments:

1) Videogames limit the player’s perception to one character or a set of a few characters, whereas films allow you to become actively involved with all characters and lets you experience all sides of the story, protagonist and antagonist alike.

2) Film is interaction, but on a different level; film strives to invoke a response or reaction from the audience by engaging the viewer and stimulating thought. The success on any film depends on how the audience reacts to it. Therefore, a film’s significance is based solely on the values of the individual viewer.

I would like to know any other arguments that anyone else thinks is relevent to the conversation.

  1. I dunno if this is relevant or not (maybe if you are going to use some examples) but perhaps you could go to IMDB and search keywords for 'breaking the fourth wall' and you will get a list of movies where a character will interact directly with the audience. My favourite of those is the original Funny Games but if your essay falls a few words short of your target it might be worth a paragraph or two.

  2. I think you should roll with your idea bro. The two main arguments you listed alone seems to arm you with some good stuff. You seem to be very knowledgeable and have some great ideas to support your argument anyway. You should check out a movie called Vantage Point. It's the most interactive movie I've seen that allows you to experience all kinds of outlooks through several characters.

Sorry I haven't any ideas that you haven't already posed in your question.

  3. I actually think the opposite is true.  Games are more interactive than movies. With movies you are subjected to the director's point of view.  With video games the user (to an extent) actually controls the story, and the ending is usually dependent on the actions the user takes. here is an excerpt from a study pbs did:

    6. Video games are not a meaningful form of expression.

....Many early games were little more than shooting galleries where players were encouraged to blast everything that moved. Many current games are designed to be ethical testing grounds. They allow players to navigate an expansive and open-ended world, make their own choices and witness their consequences. The Sims designer Will Wright argues that games are perhaps the only medium that allows us to experience guilt over the actions of fictional characters. In a movie, one can always pull back and condemn the character or the artist when they cross certain social boundaries. But in playing a game, we choose what happens to the characters. In the right circumstances, we can be encouraged to examine our own values by seeing how we behave within virtual space.
