  1. extensive testing, knowledge about materials, better calculations, stricter rules.

  2. depends on what type of car but now the newer cars have better seat belt to hold you in and more air bags and the air bags dont come out at 70MPH to hit you in the face. But the older ones were made of metal so if an accident happened you could pop it out easier then now days where you got to replace all the plastic and fiber. I personaly like older cars but thats cuz they are easier to fix if an accident happeneds and they look better =)

  3. Keyless ignition

    Navigation systems & traffic information

    Electronic Stability Control

    Traction control

    Backup cameras

    Automatic headlights

    Run-flat tires

    Tire-pressure monitoring systems

    Curtain air bags

    Adaptive cruise control

    Vehicle telematics

    Stronger Crumple zones

    Anti-Lock braking

    Stronger and better seat belts

    Better driver and passenger airbags

  4. Air bags,  Anti Lock Brakes, Better crumple zones, And more & more reinforcements.

  5. The "weakened" frame, so it absorbs a lot of the impact force instead of it going to you.

    Air Bags.

    ABS (Antilock Bake System)

  6. What do you consider older?  Cars have not gotten significantly safer since the 90's, but their have been a lot of minor improvements.  They have gotten significantly safer since the 60's.  Even things like door latches that don't fly open in an accident were inovations in the late 60s.

That said, cars from the 60's are somewhat safe because of their weight.  Smaller cars always do worse in an accident.

I'll list a few of the safety improvements since the 50's

    Three point seat belts

    Rear shoulder belts

    Head restraints

padded dashes and interiors designed without sharp k***s, etc

    Safer fuel tank locations

Crumple zones- these came out on hoods in the 60's because if the hood didn't buckle in an accident it could just be pushed back and decapitate a driver

Collapaseable steering columns to prevent driver impalement by the steering column

In the 90s we got better crumble zones and airbags.

I could go on and on, but i hope this rambling helps answer your question.

  7. Here's one noone has mentioned so far...

The anti-rollover system invented by Volvo. SUVs and pickups are inherently unstable (high center of gravity) so this system will help prevent these vehicles from rolling over when having to make an "avoidance" maneuver.

  8. Silly question. Of course newer cars are safer than older cars because of ALL the answers you've gotten. Old cars (meaning those built before 1971) have something newer cars will never ever have....soul!
