As a result of the Preakness, I ended up losing money even though I hit the exacta. I was wondering how the payouts are calculated. Thank you.

  1. you played the favorites, you can always look on a t.v. monitor and see the prices before they run...if you are going to key the favorite with the field and you notice that the the 2 favorites are only going to give you back $20.00 if they run 1-2, you then have to limit you wagers to $20.00 to make sure you at least  can break even.

  2. It depends on the money in the pool based on the numbers/runners played by handicappers. In the Preakness, you had the three runners that handicappers had played more to finish in that order, so the payout was spread over more winning exacta and tri tickets.

When playing favorites, you need to bet a smaller amount of maoney on combinations with any hope to show a good profit.

  3. The exacta and trifecta pools are separate. At Pimlico the takeout  from the exacta pool is 21% and the takeout from the trifecta pool is 25.75%. The payouts are calculated by the number of winning tickets that were in those pools ( after the track takeout ) The winners of the exacta and trifecta share the amount of money that's in the pool. The more winners there are, the smaller the payout. The less winners there are, the larger the payout.

  4. After the takeout, the remaining money is divided among the winning tickets. This is the case for all betting pools including win, place, show, exacta, perfecta, trifecta and all other exotic bets.
