How are people still driving V8 trucks/SUVs?

Gas is outrageous, and I still see people in their huge Suburbans. I'm not trying to ban big SUVs. I know there are tricks to improve gas mileage such as not stepping on the accelerator and not braking too fast. What else could one do?

  1. I drive a 1999 Silverrado short bed truck with a 5.3 liter V8.I have always been a truck lover, and I dont plan on down sizing anytime soon.I make all my trips to stores and get everything I need in one trip .I drive it 50 miles a day round trip to work.I dont run it hard keep it a 55mph.I make certain it is maintained to get peak performance, and this may sound strange I only buy premium gas for it.I figure I get around 18 miles per gallon, but I know there are more fuel effecient cars out there but I know I would never be satisfied with them. Some of us folks would rather sacrifice on buying other things so we can put the money in our trucks tanks.

  2. drive when it is only nessesary. ya i have a 97 dodge ram 1500 it isn't as bad on gas as most people would think it gets anywhere from 14 to 16 mpg. whichh isn't bad for a truck i don't think and most of the newer trucks and suv's get pretty good gas millage we rented a full sized ford and we got 20 mpg so ya gas prices are high but big feul tank means more miles

  3. I sell used vehicles and that includes the suvs and pickups.  We sell more suvs and trucks right now then we do cars.  Why?  Because they are at a all time low on resell and that means that you can pick them up cheap.  But should someone come in and want to trade it for something else they will not get a quarter of what it is worth as even the car dealers are not wanting to buy them.  I noticed in a comment below that someone had wrote that the roll down the windows to save gas, the ac only used between 3 and 5 percent more gas if the system is working correctly and allows those in the cabin to be cooler and to enjoy the ride.  With that said, yes it cost more to fill the gas tank of a suv, but some of them will go farther on a tank then cars and some of the suvs actually have a 6 cyl. in them and get just as good gas mileage as cars do.  I have a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer and it gets 26 mpg with the air on.  Keep your suv maintained, get a tune up and make sure that the tires are properly inflated.  Tire inflation can use up to 5 percent more gas per mile if they are not properly inflated.

  4. I think part of the reason is people know they will lose their butts if the trade in or sell them, and then there are people who just have to have a big vehicle, and will do so regardless as to the gas prices.

  5. cause it mite be the only thing they have to drive that makes alot of sence you know not cause they dont have a choice to say ok iam buying a new car are truck to day us poor people here and the usa are not rich are any thing now the rich people dont care about gas prices ever they just fill it up and thats it i still drive my 97 chevy in it eats the gas up i have to refill every 4 days cause of work and plus when you truck just sits there in the sun it eats you gas up and so does the ac in you truck eats it up to so i just roll the window down and save alot of gas and i try to go faster than what the speed limit is that can all so eat your gas up to

  6. maybe thats all they can afford. just keep it all tuned up good and keep the air checked in the tires, you would be surprised how many miles you can get in a tank of gas.

  7. pee in your gas tank hahaa
