  1. The only time it is an issue is when refueling. Then the plane is grounded with a cable. In the air there is nowhere for the static to discharge.


  2. A connection to ground helps limit the voltage built up between power circuits and the earth, protecting circuit insulation from damage due to excessive voltage.

    Connections to ground may be used to limit the build-up of static electricity when handling flammable products or when repairing electronic devices

  3. They trail a big ball of cats behind them.

  4. In flight they have trailing tuffs of conductive material on their wings, horizontal, and veritical tail assemblies that dissipates the static electricity into the air.  On the ground, they are connected to a grounding wire.
