How are rainbows made please?

something to do with light prisims? and how come some are brighter and some stay longer than others?

  1. Rainbows are created by sunlight passing through water droplets or mist still falling after a thunder shower or passing rain. It only happens when the sun shines right after a rain shower. It also means if you're a believer, Gods promise, that the earth would never end again by a flood, as in Noah's day.


  2. Water is dispersive: the speed of light in water depends on its wavelength.  So, a water droplet works like a prism.  Rainbows often appear double; in one of them, there is one internal reflection in each water drop, and in the other, there are two.

  3. dispersion of white light into the 7 colours...due to refraction...with the little numerous tiny droplets of water as prisms....
