Question:

How are seafood and poultry "not meat"?

The Compact Oxford English Dictionary defines meat as "the flesh of an animal as food". I think most of us would agree that fish and chickens are animals and not plants, so how would the flesh of these animals be classified as anything other than meat?

  1. They are meat.  Meat is flesh..human flesh is even meat.  I guess in some religions..they made up their own definition that meat is mammal only.

  2. Simply because you haven't looked into the historical roots of the word and different definitions still in current usage:

"The word meat is also used by the meat packing and butchering industry in a more restrictive sense - the flesh of mammalian species (pigs, cattle, etc.) raised and butchered for human consumption, to the exclusion of fish, poultry, and eggs. Eggs and seafood are rarely referred to as meat even though they consist of animal tissue."

Meat is a v. old word that has had different meanings to different people(s) over time.

If the most dogmatic vegetarians could have their way and ban all 'meat' consumption it would no longer be possible to feed the majority of the world's population and we would soon be overrun w. animals eating our starvation rations even in rich countries so it's a good thing that it is a luxury lifestyle choice that can't be enforced!

  3. It's meat. The other stuff is considered red meat, that's why they don't see fish and poultry in the same way. Whatever.

Vegetarians eat eggs because you don't have to kill the chicken to get the eggs and they lay them all the time. Many don't realize how chickens are treated, though.

People say things because they think they know better than everyone else. Just don't listen to these people. You know what's right, so teach it to those who will listen and forget the rest.

  4. It IS meat. Fish is flesh. Chicken is flesh. Vegetarians don't eat *animals*. So NO animals- no chicken, pig, fish etc. Some people eat meat and call themselves 'vegetarian', when they are not.

  5. seafood and poultry is meat. vegans eat no animals

  6. food are a food ,and food must by every one and recycled after recycled for every one from this earth with space...

  7. I agree with you that seafood and poultry are meat.

Some vegetarians, mainly women, like the attention by calling themselves vegetarians.  They rationalize that it with the it's  not "red meat" so it's okay.

    Why?

They, mainly women,  like the attention by telling people they are vegetarians.

Also, they like to think their saving a cow or a pig from suffering.  I guess fish don't suffer since they can't squeal or mo when it's in pain.

  8. It is meat. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron.

  9. No fish and poultry are **not** vegetarian.

The biological or taxonomic classification of fish is:

    Kingdom: Animalia

    Phylum: Chrordata

Their Class, SubClass, Order, Family, Genus and Species may vary but they all belong to the the kingdom *ANIMALIA*.

The biological or taxonomic classification of birds are:

    Kingdom: Animalia

    Phylum: Chordata

    Subphylum: Vertebrata

    Class: Aves

    Species: (may vary)

    chicken & fish = ***animal*** = flesh

so clearly fish and poultry are animals not plants. vegetarians don't eat animals. not all people choose to eat animal flesh, so no I disagree with this definition of flesh as food.

  10. Of course it's meat!

Look, hon....those people who say, "Oh, yes, I'm a vegetarian but I do eat fish" are just ignorant. Ininformed on the subject matter. They don't know any better.

You can either smile and keep it to yourself, or you can try to edcuate them.

A VEGETARIAN DOES NOT EAT ANIMALS OF ANY KIND.

  11. hmm, yes, sounds like some people are thinking the creatures that live in water are an exception, tell that to the dolphins!

  12. They are animals that have flesh, a face, a central nervous system, and therefore vegetarians and vegans don't eat them. They definitely are meat when killed and eaten for food.....yuck....poor little animals......

  13. because they do not have 4 legs
