  1. Both members of the legume family.

Beans and peas have pods that contain rows of seeds.

In general, pea pods grow on a vine while bean pods grow on a bush.

Peas have a hollow stem and beans have a solid stem, but am having trouble confirming this fairly obscure fact.

In any case, their similarities far outweigh these minor technical differences. Legumes are nutritional powerhouses, packing an average of 14 to 20 grams of protein, 6 to 8 grams of fiber and less than 2 grams of fat, along with plenty of vitamins (B vitamins in particular) and essential minerals (iron, calcium, potassium and phosphorus) in about 200 to 250 calories per cup.

  2. peas and beans both grow on a vine in a pod - beans are harder - there are many different varieties - beans are usually dried.
