How are sleeper/2nd class trains between Bangalore and Mumbai?

Im an international tourist willing to experience a good train ride in India. I intend on traveling to Mumbai from Bangalore on a 2nd class sleeper train to experience the country side more closely. How safe is it to do that alone and what is the experience like on a 2nd class train?
