Fred Thompson said in his speech that Sarah Palin was from a small town and had small town values. What exactly does that mean. ? I am from Philadelphia( the sixth most populous city in America) and I want to know why coming from a large city is bad.

I go to work, pay my taxes and even attend church regularly.I care for and love my country just like someone from a city of 6,000. Do people in small towns feel superior to us? Do they think they have the upperhand when it comes to values and morals? I am just curious.

  1. i'm from a small town (12,000) and my values don't correlate with sarah palin's. i'm not all about gun rights and think creationism should not be taught in schools. i know people from cities and people from rural areas who have values like mine and values not like mine. i hate guns. i believe in evolution.

i think your values and morals are more based on your parents and how you are brought up. i think your parent's level of education and your level of education also play a part in your political convictions.

i think generalizations are often made about small town people. one of the things that is irritating about both republicans and democrats is the things that are assumed.

  2. Just more of the same partisan politics Bush used during his campaign.

  3. I think you will find "small town" values change everywhere. I'm from a town of about 9,000 (one of the larger ones in Vermont if you can beleive it), but our town still voted 65% or so for Kerry in the last election, even though our state has a Republican Governor and an Independent senator.

"Small town values" is a made up phrase by Republican politicians that is somehow supposed to be a cosy way of saying "conservative values." They're not at all the same.

And for the record, my town and Wasillia are the same size, and our town manager is brain-dead. Governing over 9000 people is like saying you take care of plants: for the most part they take care of themselves.

  4. they want you to believe that the challenges faced in leading a small town of 8,000 is comparable to that of a city of 2 million like Chicago or like Philly. You know that's not true in any way shape or form.

  5. One big word CRIME we do not tolerate it. You in the big cities just put up bars and triple locks and Philadelphia has one of the worst crime records of all the big cities just a many murders as lives lost in Iraq.

  6. It is divisive politics. The repubs plan on running on the the "US against THEM" platform this year.

  7. No, most arguments are going the other way saying a small town does not qualify.

  8. It's simply a way to get hicks and those small town people with a chip on their shoulder excited, if you notice those comments get the republicans very excited and they whoop and holler.  This is what is exciting to them.

  9. It's all stereotypes. Being from the city isn't bad. Being from anywhere isn't bad. It's who you are, but the stereotype has arisen of "nice country folk". Some of it is probably true, but exaggerated. Of course on the flip side of that, the democrats claim that the country is less educated, which is somewhat true (hillbillies and rednecks) but exaggerated. In the end, the best thing to do is look at the issues and what you agree with to decide who you will vote for.

  10. Coming from a large city isn't bad. I'm from NYC and my values are just fine. I value family, education, and living right in all area of my life (I'm not speaking religiously here).

I think people from small towns actually feel inferior to big city-ers that's why this statement was said.
