  1. some cells use a method called phagocytosis where the cell engulfs the material. this is a form of active transport. and if you are talking about materials too large to enter via diffusion across the cell's membrane then active transport is also found in the form of special protiens that can move these materials back and forth


  2. Items that are too large can be taken into the cell by endocytosis.

    Phagocytosis or pinocytosis. The cell membrane engulfs the material and then pinches off and the substance enters the cell in a vacuole.
