  1. Generally, most states' names come from Native American words, for example, Utah comes from a Ute Indian word meaning "in the tops of the mountains".  Others are named after other places, such as New York and New Jersey.  Some are named after people, like Washington and Georgia.  Others come from the language of the settlers, like Florida, which was named by the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon for its bright and beautiful flowers.
