  1. Well at my college, someone comes in and observes the teacher while they give their lecture.

But if you mean like in an interview, there are usually a panel of teachers/administrators and they ask for a demonstration of how they'd teach the material.

  2. Colleagues do not evaluate; administrators do.  Having your colleague (equal) evaluate you could lead to situations where you couldn't turn to them for advice, as you'd worry it could effect your next evaluation.  Or it could lead to situations where colleagues do not share resources, but horde them, in hopes of getting a better review than their colleagues.

Administrators in my building do 2-4 observations a year, whereby they pop in unexpectedly and stay for 15 minutes or 90.  Those observations are then written up with recommendations and signed off by all parties involved.  If administrators have concerns, they perform more formal observations (notice, preconference, written lesson plans, postconference) and do them more than 4x/school year.  Each pop-in visit is done by a different administrator so a more-rounded, less-biased evaluation can be gained.

  3. my colleagues are not supposed to evaluate.

but as with any job, they do - its called office politics - I try to stay as far away from that as possible. These are simply the way another thinks of your teaching style etc.. they have no weight anywhere - just people talking.

Now - there are some evaluations I seek out - rather call it constructive criticism - I activly seek out those teachers I admire and respect and ask them to look at a lesson, pick their brain about how they would approach a situation or student problem - thats less evaluation and more working together....

The only true evaluations come from district administration officials - and for new teachers from their college advisors.
