  1. Just like water vapour,CO2 is also a powerful absorber of heat radiation (terrestial  radiation) emitted by the earth's surface. The direct solar radiation is a short-wave radiation and hence it is not absorbed by CO2 in the atmosphere whereas CO2 absorbs effectively the reflected long-wave radiation from the surface.Hence the air near the surface remains warmer.Thus,CO2 traps the outgoing radiation thereby preventing it from escaping into space. This is the reason why CO2 is considered as a greenhouse gas.

Hence ,an increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere will increase the average temperature of the lower atmosphere.

  2. because carbon dioxide damages the ozone, therefore the sun rays penetrate which gives us hotter temperatures.

  3. CO2 actually binds together with other elements in the atmosphere to create a layer of some kind. You should know heat comes from the Sun, bounces off the surface of Earth and then leaves into space. The layer of gases prevents the heat from reaching space, so it builds up inside -> Greenhouse effect.

svt24 that is incorrect. CO2 does not damage ozone and less ozone doesn't directly mean hotter temperatures. No ozone means ultra-violet rays can pass through the atmosphere, giving bad burns on skin and skin cancer.

  4. As the carbon dioxide and, even worse, methane levels in the atmosphere increase, what is called a "greenhouse effect" takes place.

This means that the warm rays of the sun can pass straight through the atmosphere to warm the land and the oceans beneath, but the heat reflected by the land and the oceans, which should simply dissipate through the atmosphere into outer space, is now trapped by the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, so the lower levels of the atmosphere and the land and oceans beneath, just get warmer and warmer until we all start to cook.
