Question:

How are the Irish taking to GMOs?

Here in the States, because of conglomerates like Monsanto buying out our Congre$$, we Amerikans are being treated like guinea pigs (cavies). Special interest groups have won (bought) the right to market their goods without having to make the consumer aware their food contains genetically modified substances. Unfortunately over 2/3rds of our food have been corrupted with this unproven frankenscience.

How are GMOs accepted in Ireland? I've heard that the EU is less receptive of them, but came across an article today about a crop of GM potatoes being grown near Tara (see <>http://www.gmfreeireland.org/potato/> ). Given the previous famine issue, I am surprised to see this being allowed.

Thanks,

Donimus

  1. "Given the previous famine issue, I am surprised to see this being allowed."

You make it sound like it was 6 months ago!

I could'nt get your limk to work but from what I remember hearing about the GM potattoes in meath was that they were being groen as a test and were not for human consuption i.e a crop was grown every year and destroyed!

I think it was to test irelands compatibility if the EU's position was to change.

  2. There is nothing wrong with GM foods.

there are no detremental effects to humans, we dont absorb the genes of plants, Also the agrobacterium method is a natural method.

the bread we eat today is a result of early mans breeding of crops for the best yields,

These were the first Gm plants.

The benefits of GM foods to the third world is worth more than anything.

Every country is going to see GM foods come to the fore as higher yields and higher profits dictate the issue.

the Eu however does not bow to conglomorates. If the EU issues a directive all countries within the EU must take up this directive.

The agrobacterium method is a naturally occuring process. Plants can be made sterile so that they dont breed. this could be done naturally any way.
