  1. Well seeing as in a free market there is a glorious lack of regulation, companies can overuse or abuse the rivers very easily. As the above answer said, it can lead to polluting, but it can also lead to the whole river drying up because of too much use upstream, causing the whole river's ecosystem to perish.

  2. Ok to compete in a market driven economy companies will try to cut costs, if they dont cut their costs they cant compete with other companies as the only aim of capitalist companies is to earn profit. So these companys will avoid doing anything which costs money. So for example if a factory is making a soft drink, it will have to pump in water, from a river or from a lake. Then the excess of the product will be pumped out of the factory into the river. If it can get away with it (and there is lack of regulation like in many third world countries they will pump it into the river, which pollutes the river) they will harm the rivers. Regulation is many industrialised countries helps limit the harm they do to the environment. However in third world countries there are no such safeguards. However for nations to compete with each other they will not over regulate their economies otherwise they think this will deter investment in them from capitalist countries and companies. Sorry this is a rather long explanation, I hope this answers your question.

  3. they are dumping poisonous chemicals into the rivers which give fish leasions and cancer and make them un eatable
