Now that Sharapova has been eliminated, would it be possible for any of the top female players to take the number 1 spot from her? How far would they have to go in the tournament to accomplish this?

  1. I have a feeling that the woman who wins the title at Roland Garros will also walk away as the new #1.  Mathematically, that means the winner will be either Ivanovic, Jankovic, or Kuznetsova.  Although Safina or Dementieva could prove me wrong and end up winning the title.  In either scenario, Maria will likely find herself falling to the #2 or possibly even #3 ranking after the French Open.

  2. Ana, Jelena, and Svetlana all can be number one after the French.

In order for Ana to be number one, She has to beat Jelena in the semis and Svetlana has to lose in the quarters. Now that Jelena has made it to the semis. Ana cannot lose. If Ana does beat Jelena and Svetlana makes it to the finals Ana has to win the title.

For Jelena to be number one, she has to beat Ana and Svetlana has to lose before the Finals.

In order for Svetlana to be number one she has to be the champion I think.

  3. Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, and Svetlana Kuznetsova all have a chance to be number 1, but in order to do that, they must win the title.

Maria will lose 310 points because of her 4th round exit, and she'll have 3856 points.

  4. Ana Ivanovic is number 1 now.
