  1. Seed Dispersal of the winged seeds primarily by wind. Most fall within 80'-200' of the tree, but some travel over 500'. Some dispersal by small mammals.

  2. The common name for balsam (the annual garden flower, Impatiens balsamina) is nicknamed Touch Me Not.  This refers to the ripe seed pod's propensity to explode and send its seed packets flying at the slightest touch. Thus, the seeds are flung out to find new places to grow.

As for the balsam fir tree, the seeds are dispersed by the cone getting moved around and dropping out or by having animals eat them and being passed.

  3. Through explosive mechanism in the fruit. The Himalayan Balsam flings its seeds with a great force so that they will travel far away from the original plant so that they are not seen growing close together. It will also explode if touched or knocked.
