  1. Tikal is awesome; you'll definitely enjoy it.  If I were you I'd stay a couple days, which ought to be enough to see the whole thing, although you could see it in one if had to. The most famous area  is the central plaza, but I would also see the Mundo Perdido complex and Temple IV, which is ruined and overgrown but gives you a 250-ft high birds eye view of the city.  Also might want to bring binocs and spend some time on the wildlife and jungle (best in early morning or late evening).

As for hotels, well, I stayed in a hammock for $6/night, so I can't really say heh...there are like 3 or 4 hotels right next to the ruins that looked decent, other than that there's the rather unattractive of Flores about an hour from the ruins by minibus.

  2. Tikal is awesome, and they are uncovering more all the time.  Once you are in the park, you can get a map and you should be able to see everything there in a day or two.

Outside of Tikal, Flores doesn't have a lot to offer.  If you didn't want to stay the night, Tikal Jets offers same day there and back flights fairly cheep.

If you do want to stay multiple days, you could also take a side trip to the Ceibal ruins, which are mostly covered, but very interesting for the jungle sites themsevles.

Included a link to wikitravel which list some hotel options.
