  1. I personally have a salay, but there also subcontractors paid by the hour or day or whatever.

My compensation on overtime is generally not financial, just let's say I work on a Saturday, and then my boss will let me pick one day off in lue for that saturday that I worked.

  3. Engineers are "Professionals" they work for a salary.  That means you work "until the job is done."  The work rules vary.

Some companies offer compensatory time off.  Work 5 hours overtime and get 5 to 7.5 hours added to your vacation time.  Sometimes this must be taken in the same week or month as the time you worked overtime.  I got to save mine up.  I got 80 hours per year plus my comp time.  I never got less than 4 weeks vacation a year.  I loved that system.  I retired with 240 hours in the bank and got that in cash.

Some companies offer Flex Time.  I got to go in late (or early) and do personal things without losing pay.  (Start work at 7:00 AM and leave at 4:00 PM for a doctor appointment or watch my kid play soccer.)

I did not have to punch a timeclock, things like long lunches were not an issue.
