Question:

How are you supposed to breathe when running a mile under 10 minutes??

its for athletics at school and on the 3rd lap of 100 meters each lap, i can barely get to half way and then i HAVE to stop.

  1. Like other people said, in through your nose and out through your mouth is universally the best way to do it. Air is warmed better through the nose and that makes is more comfortable and such to breathe.

    Of course it depends on different people. I know kids who can't breathe in through their nose and such.

    I personally breathe in through my mouth and nose at the same time.

    My advice to you is to do what feels comfortable but above all try to develop a rhythm. Breathe in every two steps and then out every two steps.  


  2. run more... are u sure the laps aren't 400 meters each, if they're only 100 each, it would take 16 laps (a mile is around 1600m) to make a mile... if your not even getting 300 meters before your out of breath... go see a doctor

  3. Christ on a crutch! If I hear one more person say breath in thru your nose i'm going to postal.  breath however works best for you.  If breathing in thru your mouth works then do it.  If taking two breaths in and one breath out, like some say, than do that. Just breath. Your breathing should be labored as you run but you shouldn't be gasping for air.  If you are sucking wind, you are probably running to hard and you need to take it down a notch.  Don't give up.  Keep running and your endurance will get stronger.  Run when you don't want to. run run run. It will become a habit for life.  Just breath.  Breathing actually takes care of its self.

  4. There is no "right" way to breathe when running.

    The right way is the way YOU feel most comfortable breathing while running.

    I think the reason you have to stop is because you're going to fast. Try slowing your pace down and then you would be able to go all the way without stopping.

    I'm not sure why you have to run under 10 minutes, but if you don't have to, slow your pace down, and then you won't have to stop.

    Remember : "Your body will break before your mind, but you must move forward."

  5. Your suppose to breathe in by the nose which will warm the air as it enters your body and then push it out through your mouth. It's suppose to make you run longer and easier.

    I had to do this for school, too. I noticed that the main problem most people were having was they sprinted the first 30 meters or so, and then had to walk. Start at a SLOW pace, it doesn't matter if people get ahead of you, because you'll pass them when they have to stop.

    To pace yourself, you could try running next to a classmate that's roughly your size (so you can match steps) and runs the mile in around 10 minutes (as opposed to 7 or 8, no point in racing).

    Find a rhythm to match your breaths to your steps, I usually take a breath in with the left foot, and a breath out with the right (or vice-versa, so long as it's a breath per step).

    I also repeat a sentence in my head, again, one that has words that are naturally stressed as my feet hit the ground. It's a bit like when you used to jump rope and sing: "Cinder-ella, dressed in, ye-llow, went up-stairs to, meet a fe-llow" to time your jump.

    Of course, practicing won't hurt, jog a bit after school, or just walk a bit more. Oh, and comfy shoes.

  9. Personally, I use only my nose for the majority of the run and I switch to in through the nose and out through the mouth in my final kick. Test different ways of breathing  while running to see what works best for you. However, I will condemn breathing in through your mouth at any time because it will dry your throat very quickly.

    Here's an additional tip (if you're allowed to wear a watch during your mile): Try for 8:00 - keep your pace and aim for 30 seconds each 100m. Do not go more than a few seconds faster or slower on any of your 16 splits unless your feeling good enough to give a final kick in your last 100 or 200m. Good luck!
