How are you supposed to construct a quote with more than 40 words?

because someone told me that my quotes are too long and i need to format them different, and my english teacher last year wouldn't tell me how to do it because she said it was too complicated

  1. First of all, I would suggest that you use only the part of the quote you need, placing "..." where you have removed something. Secondly, a long quote is usually called a 'block quote' and is anything that is four lines or more. Block quotes are introduced with a colon and then the entire quote is indented (like a paragraph) one inch from the margin without quotation marks. Then, the quote is cited after the final punctuation. - This is MLA formatting, which is why she probably said it was too complicated. See source for an example.

It depends, if the quote is format-ed straight from the book and has commas, and things of that nature, then take to quote straight from the book, and if it is in sentences you can break it up like putting two sentences together, ending that part of the quote, and putting some commentary after it. Then use a connector like, "Also".
