On September. 19th I have to have all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. They are putting an iv directly into my veins because the nerves of my wisdom teeth are around the nerves of my mouth. The wisdom teeth are so far down they have to go through the bone. I'm so scared could someone please help me?!?!

  1. If you are going to be awake, be prepared. Everyone says "oh it's fine, it won't hurt" but everyone is different. I was told it won't hurt and it was the most painful experience of my life. I got mine removed on Monday and I was awake with local anesthesia. The top two were fine, didn't hurt, just felt pressure. But the bottom two hurt so bad, I have never felt pain like that in my entire life. The nerves of my teeth were also near my wisdom teeth, and the doctor got ahold of them and it was so painful I was screaming and crying. Now I have nerve damage and I have lost complete feeling in part of my face. They don't know when or if it will ever come back. I'm really not trying to freak you out, I'm just telling you that everyone has a different experience and prepare yourself. If you are really nervous your dentist or oral surgeon can prescribe you some valium or xanax for the procedure. And don't worry about afterward, you'll get tons of vicodin so you won't be in pain after. The actual procedure is the worst part. Also waking up in the morning you kind of feel like you hit a brick wall face first going 100mph. It has been 4 days and I am still recovering, but feeling a tiny bit better every day.

Because your nerves are an issue, make sure you doctor discusses your risks of nerve damage. I wasn't told anything about the possibilities of it and my nerves were in fact damaged!

****** I STRONGLY recommend (based on my personal experience) that if you have the option to be put under general anesthesia vs. local, that you do it!!! That way you won't feel anything in case the doctor traumatizes or upsets the nerves.

P.S. I really do feel for you, I was in your shoes just a few days ago! Best of luck, and I hope you don't have the same experience I have!

  2. didn't hurt me at all, i had no swelling, no pain at all!   It's not the same for everyone!

  3. I think I had something similar done to what you described here. However, I just got needles. During the procedure the surgeon drilled into my jaw a bit to get a better grasp of the wisdom teeth. Don't worry, I didn't feel a thing! It wasn't a traumatic experience at all (and I'm quite the scaredy cat, hehe).

It always surprises me when I hear people getting all 4 wisdom teeth pulled out at once. I had mine taken out in 2 sessions; first the ones on my left and then the ones on my right side. My dentist told me it's done like that so that after the surgery I could chew food on the opposite side. I've had a comfortable healing process. I'd recommend asking your surgeon about doing it this way, and see what they say.

    Good luck with your surgery!

  4. Trust me it won't hurt. It is out before you know it. Don't sweat!

  5. Just relax and don't stress out about it. It's nothing to worry about. I really hate dental work, so getting a surgery in my mouth was no fun for me to think about either. But I just had four of my wisdom teeth removed four weeks ago and I can tell you that it is not worth worrying about.

They will give you a gas mask for oxygen and they also say they will give you some laughing gas. Most of the time, the laughing gas will make you feel a bit light-headed and relaxed so you won't even notice if they put the IV in you. For me, the laughing gas had no effect on me so I was completely conscious for the IV. The surgeon put a rubber band around my arm so they could see the veins more clearly and it was a tiny pinch and the IV was injected. It feels just like a small shot. You will fall asleep in literally less than half a minute so you won't even get much of a chance to see anything. The actual operation takes about 5-6 minutes per tooth. And after they are finished, it will usually take you about 10 minutes to wake up. But the whole thing really only feels like a minute.

As long as you use general anesthesia, and take your painkillers on a tight schedule, and follow your doctor's instructions on post-operative care, you will be fine. I never had any pain with the surgery, and no swelling. So, don't worry about it. Your stressing out is actually the hardest part of the procedure. That's what will make you most uncomfortable. But trust me, once you get into that chair and they put you on the IV, you won't even get a chance to worry about it. You will fall asleep and a minute later, you're done and out of there. Really.

Good luck with your surgery and hope you have a fast recovery =)
