How bad is the diplomatic situation between the UK and Russia and the moment?

Its pretty serious. A former KGB agent is killed and the main suspect is another former KGB agent who Russia refuses to extradite. Then the UK expells Russian diplomats in response. I'd say things are pretty frosty at the moment, but I doubt it will erupt into major conflict.

Well, the British Ambassador in Moscow is Anthony Brenton, CMG. -The only Ambassador for almost a hundred years to not have already been elevated to a knighthood; before he was given the job? (So far most of his time has been spent on supporting and attending Dissident meetings against Vladimir Putin. When in fact one would have thought that his actual job should be in exchanging views with the latter and developing positive mutual relations). It was the former who approved the Visitors Visa's for the the FSB assassins to murder Alexander Litvinenko. Thus, what with the attempts by both BP and Shell to usurp most of Russia's Oil and Gas assets, whilst profiting enormously themselves and boosting their own companies wealth, there is not a lot that we have done in the last decade to work WITH the Russians.  (We should perhaps remember that Russians, like the Chinese and all other nations, all the real people want, is to live a life? -To be educated, grow up, have a satisfying job, live, love and have a family. All the people in the world are the same. (With a few ultra religious gliche's here and there?)

     Final answer?  On a scale of 1-10 in the last decade: Approximately 2!  (We have some business investments in Russia, but largely Mafia controlled and condoned by the Russian Government, who like us, do not represent the people). Vladimir Putin, for all his miryiad failings? Is a very strong man, which is what Russia needs in the face of the Mafia. Whereas we have a very weak virtually useless Government and Opposition, who are solely interested in their take home pay and exorbitant expenses, as we all know? Ask the Flood victims, Bomb Victims, War Dead and War Injured. Ask our Generals, who have said it all already.

Of course, it isn't foreign ministers that have been expelled (as one answerer said) but Russian diplomats.

If it hasn't happened already, expect Russia to at least go t*t for tat and expell British diplomats.

Of course Russian rhetoric is certain to heat up, but when they've already been likening the West to n**i Germany and talking about a repeat of their WWII successes, it wasn't like the rhetoric was responsible and statesmanlike to begin with.

Its very cool at the moment.  I think Russia thinks it has the whip hand because of the energy situation re gas supplies and probably during the winter, things might become tight again.  U.S.A. wanting to put a missile system in Europe has really inflamed the Russians and the Litvenenko affair in the U.K. did not endear Russia to the U.K.  I think that Russia is secretly still communist (Putin is and was a communist hardliner, what has changed!) I often wonder if it will go back to being an openly communist country again.

The situation is not bad really and nothing to worry about.The Uk have good relations with Russia and that will continue.They have a right to opinion in Russia as we do in this case they have put forward some valid points let them scrap it out.
