Question:

How badly does in-school suspension hurt an applicant's chances of getting into a respectable university?

I have begun applying to the nation's best universities and came across several blanks in the application process that have asked of any previous disciplinary actions throughout my legacy in high school. I had in-school suspension for 10 days during freshman year for getting into a fight. My tests scores are pretty good, have high grades, and have taken the most rigorous workload available at my school. Will a few minor slip-ups during the early years of high school hurt my chances of getting into the best colleges? If yes, how much?

  1. YES. It will hurt you of not getting accepted to a college.

  2. not at all, schools are not looking at that kinda stuff... your school will most likely not even put it in your record...

  3. If your marks are good as you say they are, then you should be ok. But if by chance the university has little space available and someone that has same marks as you, that person will get in. Its not a big deal if you have good marks. You should be ok. Good Luck

  4. pretend to forget that lapse i think its doubtfulr they kept a note on that and focus on the testing and the clubs and the activities also volunteering helps

  5. depends on how big of a jerk the rest of their rules/standards are

  6. Thats weird. I've been suspended out of school and I'm at MU. I was suspended out of school A LOT! Good luck!

  7. I once got suspended for throwing cherry bombs down toilets in the bathroon (Bart Simpson style).  I joined the military for  7 years and then joined a college with no problems.  Just wait until you are 25 or older, than the SATs don't matter either.  I didn't even get a 1000 on them (because I hate math).

  8. Little to none.  I cannot believe a university cares about a minor school incident resulting in minor discipline, especially in your early high school years.

I would answer the question by saying you received minor discipline for minor rule infractions during your freshman year and let it go.  I don't think anyone will care enough to ask further questions.

  9. you need to have a good explanation along with your application.

  10. Probably not that bed since it was Freshman/9th grade year

  11. I got 3 ALL-OUT suspensions when I was in High School... and still pissed the redneck principle off by doing good in school...

I graduated from SMU this year...

    IT doesn't hurt that much...

  12. i dont think its that bad as a criminal record to be honest

  13. If you are truly qualified, I hope that they would overlook something like a stupid fight freshman year.

    :D

  14. I had an in-school suspension, it didn't keep me from getting accepted to respectable universities. If it's from your freshman year, and you're starting your senior year, as long as your record has been clean since freshman year they will look past it most likely. good luck :)

  15. As long as you managed to complete your assignments and keep your grades / GPA  up and decent ACT scores, you should be fine. Write a unique and exceptional essay for your college applications (no need to mention your previous discipline issues.)
