Question:

How become a real estate agent?

I've recently been considering entering the real estate agent profession. I did all my schooling out side the United States.

I have the "European Bacalaureat" (no SATs). The only other possibly relevant education I've had is 2 years of architecture.

I was wondering:

What's the best procedure? (<---this is the important one!)

Where's the best place to go to practice? (I'm living in New York, considering going to Florida)

Is it a problem to study in a different state from where you intend to practice?

Can one achieve this through online courses?

Ideally, if you speak from experience, that would be great (IE: you're a real estate agent your self). Still all help is appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. In the US all real estate agents and brokers are regulated and licensed in the state they practice in. What would be true for one state may or may not be true for another.

Contact that state's real estate commission, it will be on the internet. Florida real estate commission for example. See what they require. You may have to call them and ask specific questions.

Your success will depend on the local people you know. So I would move to where ever you will be practicing and start joining organizations there. Don't join just to join- join groups that you are genuinely interested in and get involved. Get people to like you and trust you.

  2. You can study in one state and set up practice in another. Some agents in my area are licensed in more than one state, but bear in mind that the RE rules can vary greatly from state to state.

Practice in the state that has the better market, probably not Florida. But RE can be very localized, pockets of Florida are still doing OK.

Online courses are available, you can contact brokerages in Florida and see who offers the course on line.
