Navy was training near dolphin site

Press Assoc. - Wednesday, June 11

A Royal Navy submarine and survey ship were carrying out training exercises close to where 26 dolphins died after apparently panicking at an underwater disturbance, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The dolphins were found beached around the Percuil river near Falmouth, Cornwall, on Monday morning.

Marine experts said it was one of the worst cases of mass stranding in the UK and added the dolphins were likely to have been panicked by "an underwater disturbance".

The MoD said there was a submarine in the area but would not comment on the training exercise. But the underwater vessel would have relied on passive sonar during the exercise and not low frequency active sonar.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said it was issuing warnings to shipping about "extensive submarine activity" ...

  1. is this all you have to do? marine experts? ignorance is not expertise.

  2. Dont worry..

Eventually they will grow legs and all will be well.

  3. Firstly, I often leave a comment on a story that I have read if I find it interesting enough.

The article about dolphins and the affect that submarine sonar has on them is a very emotive topic.

In recent years I have done some extensive sailing in the Mediterranean Sea, and the number of submarines in that area is quite substantial. The number of dolphins that die or are seen in 'distress' is completely out of proportion to the numbers of dolphins that are present.

Dolphins are known to be intelligent, friendly, gregarious and 'family orientated' mammals. They are are also dependent on their own 'sonar' for communication and finding food.

The particular submarine in this instance was a survey vessel mapping the sea floor, this process requires a very powerful sonar and DOES affect those sea dwellers who rely on sonar for their very existence.

We the human race, owe it to other creatures to be more considerate in our actions.

  4. It must be the submarine, because Marine Mammals never beached themselves before the world had submarines!

Whats that, oh they did! Well c**p this is a dilema!

The military makes an easy target, especially on this since when it comes to secrets and keeping them secret makes defending yourself difficult.

Submarines is called the "Silent Service" not beacuse the boats are quiet, but because it is ours (and the Brits) policy "we do not discuss submarine operations", including training.

So do they give up secrets to quell this theory, or do they suck up the bad press to gaurd secrets from potential adversaries? This is the dilema today with using Active Sonar
