Question:

How best to heat my pool?

I have a small in-ground pool. It is kidney-shaped, and about 10 feet wide by about 20 feet long. It is about 7 feet deep at its deepest. It has a filter pump, but only one small "jet."

It stays warm all day, but after the sun goes down I need it a bit warmer to stay in it.

It is located in Los Angeles.

Less expensive is better.

Thanks for your advice!

  1. I'm in the los angeles area...you have many choices:

1)heat pump-more expensive than gas heater but no need to run gas line if your pool does not alrerady have one

2)solar bubble cover or automatic safety cover

3)gas heater cheaper than solar panels or a heat pump to install if you already have gas line

4)solar attic heater that takes heat from your attic and heats your pool with it....very cheap to run less than 20 bucks a month but a few thousand to install

    5)solar panels

heres my page with heating options: http://www.swimming-pool-information.com...

  2. you may need to have a pool heater installed pool company owner

  3. Solar heating is your best answer but will not work when the sun goes down.

Heat pumps are fine if you live in an area with high relative humidity. In Southern California they tend to not work as well.  They work like an air conditioner in reverse and are the cheapest way to maintain a year round pool temperature.

I have a relative that used the poly ethylene tubing used for drip irrigation to make her own solar heater.  She put this on the south facing roof in a snaking fashion and voila she had a simple collector.  This was attached to the pool plumbing to bypass some of the water to the array.

    You're welcome!!

  4. I bought these things called solar rings. They are about 4-5ft across and round. They are supposed to absorb sun during the day and heat up the pool, plus prevent chlorine from burning off. The amount you need depends on the size of your pool. My pool is 18' round and I use 7 rings. They were about $20 each on eba.y. I think they work, b/c when we do have them in the water the day before we use the pool, the temp of the water is up about 6-8 degrees. They seem to be popular.
