I have maderia cakes in oblongs, some marzepan, some raspberry jam, some roll out icing, food colouring, lots of liquorice and various sweets.

I have never made one before and want it to look fantastic!, easy suggestions would be most welcome. It is for the 6th Sept and I am not sure when I should make it.

  1. It's easiest if you use storebought cookies, since they're all the identical size (in theory:).  Either those round chocolate ice cream wafers, or even Oreos would make smaller caterpillars (or the new Oreco cakesters).   Beat a container of marshmellow fluff with 1/2 c. Crisco and 1-2 c. powdered sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla until thick and creamy (and sticky).  Stand the cookies on end, by using the marshmellow fluff as paste between them, and just build it as long as you want:)  You can frost it with buttercream frosting or storebought frosting.  Use M&Ms for the eyes, and cut little strands of black licorice for the feelers (or tiny pretzel sticks).  You can use the fondant to cut out flowers to decorate the bottom of it......

  2. carve them into rounds, and ice them green. Use the licorice to make legs, candies to make eyes...

There's some good pics if you just search "catapillar cake" on google images

  3. catch them in the garden before they change
