  1. http://www.socyberty.com/People/Solving-...

solving this one problem will solve many others.. unfortunately nobody wants to talk about this one problem...

  2. Vote for progressive leaders.

  3. We can either learn to live with far less and return to manual labor, or, we can learn to have fewer children or both. Both require extraordinary self-control that human beings have not been very good at historically. A few coral reef societies have seemed to master this, denying fishing rights to men for the protection of fisheries, but for the most part, man burns the last tree for fuel, plucks the last blade of grass for fodder and drains the last drop of water for crops then disappears,  collapses from exploiting the environment. I sort of expect us to destroy the Midwest providing ethanol for our cars, and draining the water table or even the Great Lakes processing it.

Rats in a cage. Rats in a cage. We saw these films of overpopulation in grade school. Why can't we even talk about it?

  4. 1. Change person habits, especially reducing our consumption.

    2. Petition the government for hard C02 caps

    3. Subsidize and utilize clean efficient sustainable energy

    4. Protect and restore the lands via trusts, charity and personal endeavors.

    5. Vote with your dollars. Buy only fairly traded green products.

    6. World Treaties focusing on the heaviest polluters (i.e. China and America).

    7. Educate and influence others to follow suit. No one person can do this alone. A critical mass of people are needed to create this momumental shift in consciousness and action.

  5. Enact a carbon cap and trade system.  Auction off the carbon credits, and use the funds to invest in green technology R&D, and subsidies.  Also teach environmental science in public schools to ensure that future generations aren't as uninformed as our own.

  6. i think we need to reduce the huge gaps between rich and poor, both within countries and particularly between countries.

it is rich people that do the vast bulk of the consuming, poor countries and people who do a great deal of the deforestation out of necessity, and poor women that are forced to breed more than is sensible for the planet. if we all converged on a middle level where people have enough food, energy, education, health services, clothes, to have a nice healthy and happy life, but not the obscene overconsumption and waste of the 'developed' (ha!) world, we might get through the next century  without major upheaval.
